SECRETARY-GENERAL SWORN IN

ASSURES DELEGATES OF IMPARTIALITY , LONDON, February 1. M. Lie was sworn in as SecretaryGeneral of U.N.O. He assured delegates of his impartiality, and said: " It will be my duty always to act as a true international officer." Although one of the secretariat's principal duties would be to assist the Security Council, there was a close connection between peace and economic and social conditions. The creation of better economic and social conditions for_ all the people was one of the principal aims of the United Nations. " Those who gave their lives in order that we may be free, those who lost tlipir homes, and those who suffered and still suffer from the war's consequences have given us a sacred mandate to build a firm foundation for world peace. The future of the whole civilised world,"'he said, "is at stake."
