FOOD POISONING: TEN IN HOSPITAL.

_Tcn people were admitted to the Buller Hospital last night suffering Ifrom suspected meat poisoning. Four were in a fairly serious condition, but had greatly improved to-day. Only four remained in hospital this morning. One group of six had eaten pressed meat at a picnic luncheon at Waimangaroa ' and later became violently, ill and had to be removed to hospital. Others had a meal at home from meat presumably obtained frpm the same source. Other cases were reported, but were not sent to hospital. The health inspector is inquiring into the source of supply and preparation of the meat. Some who ate the meat were not affected.—Westport Press Association.
RETURNING SERVICEMEN. The Minister of Defence, the Hon. F. Jones, announced to-day that the latest information was that the Athlone Castle, carrying Army, Navy, and Air Force personnel, was expected to arrive in Wellington on Thursday. The Etangitata, also with returning service personnel, was expected to arrive on Friday. Mr Jones said the Otranto, with 3,800 personnel aboard, would make the first port of call Lyttelton. She was expected to arrive there on January 13, after which she would proceed to Wellington, arriving the next day. —Wellington Press Association.
