SKY WARS
TERRIBLE NEW WEAPONS TARGET-SEEKING ROCKETS (Rec. noon). WASHINGTON, Aug. 17, General Arnold disclosed that tha United States air forces have a new plane considerably better than theSuperfortress, capable of ranging over East Asia from Western Pacific bases. General Arnold prophesied development of the atomic bomb better than* the V-bombs. Long-range planes would make the war too scientific. The time was coming when there would not be any crews in bombers. Guided missiles would obtain from 1 jet devices, speeds making it difficult to shootthem down. Defensive weapons must be equally efficient. The United States must have bases in the Pacific to en-
able it to use the new weapons in suchi a manner as not to have to. worry about direction. The same rules applied in the Atlantic. General Arnold specified, bases in the Mdrshalls, the Marianas,, Okinawa, and Tokio.
He disclosed that the air forces already have in the experimental stages rocket bombs which are attracted to their targets in reaction-to heat, to light, to metal. A year ago the_ air forces were guiding bombs by television from a plane 15 miles away.
General Arnold predicted_ the
following new weapons:—First, manned.or pilotless aircraft travelling at speeds faster than sound—aerial combat, as we know it, will disappear; second, guided missiles v capable of making exact hits on targets miles square or less in any .. part of the world; third, more v powerful atomic bombs, destructive beyond the wildest imagination; fourth, new defence weapons, such as a target-seeking rocket, which would automatically strike and destroy supersonic planes, or guided missiles.
