Royal Family Carry Surrender

to Fronts

Formal Submission at Manila

(Kec. noon.')

NEW YOKE, August 16.

The Japanese Government has sent a message to General MacArthur informing him that the Emperor Hirohito is sending members of the royal family to the fighting fronts to ensure obedience to the cease-fire order.

The message stated that six days would be required to make the inessage effective in China, eight days in Bougainville, -nn<i 12 days in New Guinea. The'message added: It is impossible for us to arrange for the flight of our representative to Manila to-morrow as demanded by General MacArthur, due to scarcity of time. We will, however, proceed immediately with preparations, and will notify General MacArthur regarding the date of the flight, which will be as soon as possible. '

The Associated Press correspondent at Manila says : General MacArthur earlier had sharply criticised the Japanese Government for delay in answering the surrender instructions. After receiving the Japanese Government's message, he said it was satisfactory. General MacArthur has granted an extension of time to Japan for her emissaries to come to Manila for surrender. He promised safe conduct for the Imperial household representatives visiting the battlefronts in order to urge the field commanders to capitulate. The correspondent" says the Japanese, planes will be met at Qieshima by three groups of Lightnings and also three bombers, which will accompany it to the landing field. The envoys will change into an American plane, and the Japanese crew will be held under guard until the envoys return.
