PICTURE THEATRES

GRAND. Topping its six predecessors in novelty and stirring suspense, ' Falcon and the Coeds,' which was released at the Grand yesterday, is regarded as one of the most thrilling of the popular R.K.O. Radio de-tective-mystery series. Called to a girls' seminary by one of the students, the Falcon finds that one of the professors has been mysteriously murdered, but that the woman dean of the institution is trying to hush up the story. Even while he is investigating the killing the dean is killed and the institution thrown into a panic. Several persons fall under suspicion. A mysterious assailant fires shots at the Falcon, but he escapes. Finally, the real killer appears, and only the quick action of the Falcon prevents another murder. Tom Conway plays the sleuth, and is given strong support by Jean Brooks, Rita Corday, and Amelita Ward. The supporting picture is an outstanding comedy, ' Rookies m Burma,' starriug Erford Gage, Joan Barclay, Claire Carleton. and Ted Hecht. MAYFAIR. A new comedy-drama, ' Top Man,' with Susanna Foster, Donald .O'Connor, and Peggy Ryan in the title roles, has pride of place in the programme shown at the Mayfair yesterday. The film tells an engrossing story of junior college boys and girls who do their bit on the industrial Front, devoting all their spare time out of college hours to war work. Important roles are filled by Anne Gwynne and Noah Beery, jun., who recently became sweethearts in Universale ' Frontier Badmen,' an historic story of the cattle wars of 1869. An entertaining drama, ' Army Surgeon ' starring James Ellison, Jane Wyatt, and Kent Taylor, ie the supporting feature.
