FUTURE OF POLAND

CONSERVATIVE PARTY REGRETS DECISION RUGBY, February 27. Soon after Mr Churchill's speech an amendment to the Government's motion was handed in bearing the names of 21 Conservative, members. The amendment, which is expected to be proposed by Mr M. Petherick (Con.) and seconded by Sir Archibald Southby (Con.), takes the form of a reminder that " Britain took up arms in the war, of which the immediate cause was the defence of Poland against German ag : gression, and in which the over-riding motive was the prevention of domination by a strong nation of its weaker neighbours," and goes on to regret the decision " to transfer to another Power the territory of an Ally, contrary to the treaty and article two of the Atlantic Chapter."

The amendment also regrets " the failure to ensure to the nations liberated from German oppression the full right to choose their own Government free from the influence of any other Power."
