A NEW DRIVE

JAPANESE IN GHINA * AIMED AGAINST AMERICAN BASES (Rec. 12.5 p;m.) : CHUNGKING, January 26. , The Chinese spokesman announced that the Japanese had launched a new drive against American bases in Southeast . China. Strong columns from Hunan Province driving east towards Kiangsi had already reached Yunghing, 30 miles south of Lieyang. The enemy from Yunghing was fanning out in several columns. The new drive was co-ordinated with several other drives in the same area aiming at full control of the Canton-Hankow railway and at clearing the area east of Hongkong in an attempt to obstruct possible Allied landings. The spokesman added that the enemy was also increasing the garrisons at Shanghai, Hangchow, Foochow, Amoy, and Swatow.
