LOSS OF LAUNCH HOPE

PORT CHALMERS SEEKS INQUIRY

Although it is now six months since the loss of the launch Hope, there is still _no indication as to whether the Marine Department intends to hold an inquiry. The matter was again discussed at a meeting of the Port Chalmers Borough Council last night, when it was decided to send a further request for a departmental inquiry to the Minister of Marine. The Mayor (Mr- H. S. Watson) presided. "If a similar tragedy occurred tomorrow, nobody could be hold responsible," said Cr A. L. S. Cassie, who moved that a further request be made for an immediate inquiry into the ci/r----cumstanees surrounding the loss of the launch Hope, so that such an accident might be prevented in the future. " The time is ripe for an inquiry to be held," said Cr W. D. To stop the stench in Mussel Bay, caused by an uncovered sewer exit, the work of extending the sewer to low water level had now begun, stated the report of the Works ■Committee.
