CHAPLAIN MISSING

FORMERLY PROMINENT FOOTBALLER Advice has been received that the .Rev. H, A. Mitchell, of the Roslyn Presbyterian Church, has been posted missing while on active service. He was born in Invercargill, and, before entering the ministry, was employed first by Messrs Ross and Glendining Ltd., and later in the office of the Public Service Commissioner at Wellington. He left the service of the Government to study at Otago University ami Knox College, and took his B.A. degree. Mr Mitchell was appointed as the first minister of the Clutha Valley charge after it had been fully sanctioned, and he remained there for four

years. v He was called to the Roslyn Church'in 1933, and remained there until his departure for overseas. At that time he was also clerik of the Dunedin Presbyterv. Mr Mitchell was a prominent Rugby footballer, and before coming to Dunedin played in Invercargill and Wellington. He was a fine five-eighth, and played for Varsity A here for several years, captaining the side at one period. He also represented Otago in 1927. He was keenly interested in rowing when in Invercargill, and was a member of the Railway Rowing Club. On one occasion he was coxswain of the Southland crew which took part in the Edmond Shield contest with Otago. When he gave up "Rugby actively he joined the Otago Referees’ Association, and had charge of several important fixtures.
