SOCIALISM
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —it was with a good deal of interest that I read your statement in the editorial on Mr Nash’s appointment to Washington, that believers in the practicability of Socialism must be disillusioned by current events. It is a pity that you' did not - have space to give instances of the failure of Socialism. The two instances 1 am giving below are perhaps the most striking. First, the deplorably weak resistance of the Socialist Russian State to the Nazis as compared with the brilliant war effort of France, Poland, and other capitalist States. Second, the disastrous slowing down of British war production after the coming into office of the Churchill Government, with so many Socialists in key positions and with so much Government control over private enterprise, after the wonderful work done by the “ true-blue ” capitalist Chamberlain Government. These are only two reasons why Socialists are being bitterly disillusioned; doubtless the future will reveal others.- —1 am, e tc., Colonel Blamp. December 30.
