Libya;. RUGBY, December 29.—A correspondent, in a despatch from the Middle Hast, states that heavy rains and muddy ground again eou•sideiably slowed down both sides yesterday. Owing; to the Hooded ground, the enemy was obliged to turn hack from liis original destination and is retreating to the west after losing a not her six tanks, while field artillery- north-east of dedbaya played havoc will; an enemy column. It is now established, says the correspondent, that it is the main core of General Rommel's depleted Panzer Corps, which is in the region of Jedbaya and which is making a desperate effort to escape from the British. R.A.F. BA IDS.' BUG BY, December 20.—Among targets attacked by the Bomber Command iu W.estcrn Germany was the great chemical works at TTnls, near Ruhr, at which the enemy's costly inbbcr substitute is manufactured. High explosive and incendiary bombs were dropped, and there were explosions of gnat violence which shot flames many ■ hundreds of feet into the air. The finAi burned unchecked, and more high explosives were piled on thorn. MOBILISATION. It was explained to-day by the Minister of Defence that completion of mobilisation would involve calls being made on the following men:—(.l) Jn the case of Territorials all those organised in units at present, plus those others who have been called by ballot and passed as medically fit;, (2) those who have been called up for service overseas, and who are waiting to be called to camp are to be posted to Territorial Force with certain exceptions who have received special notice;' (3) all members of the National Military Reserve who have been organised into units and have nut yet been culled for full-time duty .—Press Association. There will he racing at Auckland, Stratford, Marlon, Napier, Waikouaiti, and Wyndhaiii on New Year's Day, and trotting at Addington. Useful Gallop. Pink Note and Coy finished well dear of Sally Sage at the end of half a, mile this morning iu 53 l-ssee. after running the lirst furlong in 13sec. Winton Juvenile Stakes Winner. Lady Dawn, winner of the Win ton Juvenile Stakes on Saturday, is by Grattan Loyal from Lou'Thorpe, and trained by D. Todd at Mataura for Mrs E. M. Flynn. Booked for Camp. The Wingatui trainer, D. J. McDonald, is booked to go into camp early next; week. His team will be looked after by D. Jamieson during his absence. Should Win. Taxpayer should tie better -suited over nine furlongs . in Ihc High-weight Handicap at Waikouaiti than lie was over a mile and two and a-half furlongs at Wingatui. He will meet Georgia on 131 b better terms. Central Otago Team, Con While, with Papette and Lady Sincere, arrived at 'Wingatui last evening, and went on south this morning for the Wyndham and Invercargill meetings. Both horses look well. Rawhamai. As A. S. Ellis had a. team to take over to tile West Coast meetings he left Rawhamai in charge of D. J. McDonald, who will lake him to the Waikouaiti and Oamaru meetings with Compeer and Taxpayer. Not Eligible. As the Trial Plate to be run at Wail.oiiaiti is for horses that at the time of -tarting have not won a race exceeding £SO (o' the winner neither Compeer nor Princess Myosotis is now eligible to. start. Good Gallop. Bouoaut and Berrima jumped away from the mile post on the inside grass track this morning and ran the first half-mile in 50 ]-ssee. Bouoaut finished the mile in Imin 44 2-ssec. Berrima will not make the trip south. Heavy Penalties. For his double win at Wingatui last week Georgia has been penalised 171 b in the High-weight Handicap at Waikouaiti, while Cymric’s two wins have caused Inm to be

penalised 161 b. Royoney, for his win cn the opening day, has been penalised Hlb in the same race. Strip. Looking well after his race last week, Strip was allowed to run along over half a milo this morning in 54 l-ssec. His trainer’s present intentions are to miss the Wyndhara meeting with him and take him to Invercargill. Didham will have four other members of his team racing at Wyudham. Disappointed. The connections behind Military Maid were very confident about their mare’s chance in” the Otago Handicap, but after a furlong had been covered she was nuer travelling like a winner. Evidently, the go : ing did not suit her. In the Waikouaiti Cup she will meet The Raker on 71b better terms, but Parchment, who finished third to The Raker, will meet Military Maid on 21b better terms. Race Should Improve Her. Symbol won three races in succession last season, and was having her first start this year when she finished second to Maggiore m the Fcmhill Handicap on Saturday. She had not done a great deal of work previous to the meeting, and the race should sharpen her up for her engagement at Wyudham, in. which she is carded to again meet Royal Chorus, Tissue, Desert Maid, Lord Midas, and Mae West. Circular Note. Though ho finished second each day at Wingatui last week Circular Note-could not be rehandicapped in the Orbell Handicap, to he run at Waikouaiti on Thursday, but, with the exception of Green Gables, will be meeting a different lot of horses. Circular Note appears to be coming back to the good form he showed last season, and as Thursday’s field promises to be a small one he should be worth following. Georgia’s Sire. Darien, the sire of Georgia, was a failure as a racehorse when trained at Wingatui, and it is said that he was only mated with three mares before being added to the list, one of them being Real Glad, the dam of Georgia. Darien was well enough bred, being by Balboa from Sudden Storm, by Aulumnus from Helter Skelter, by Antagonist Cause of Delay. The lack of punctuality at Wingatui on' Friday and Saturday was not altogether duo to the, working of the totahsator. Owing to the shortage of stable hands there was some delay in getting the horses saddled after weighing out, causing horses to be sent out to the course later than is usually the case. Delays from the same cause are likely to be experienced also at the New Fear fixtures. Egyptian Rose. With just one exception the form shown on the first day worked out well at Wlngaini on Saturday. The exception was Egyptian Rose, who, it was stated, could not handle the going. on Friday, but on Saturday, in very similar going, made the opposition look cheap over the same distance. An 81b penalty at Waikouaiti should not stop her. Totalisator Figures. There were five fixtures held on Saturday, and the trotting meetings at Auckland and Westport both showed increases, but at the other gatherings decreases were recorded. The individual figures were:— 1941. ■ mo. £ £ Auckland (trotting) ... 77,551 75,204| Westport (trotting) ... 10,548 8,447 Win ton (trotting) 12,595-Jj 14,727 Dunedin (racing) ... ... 20,482 25,482 Taranaki (racing) 21,369 i 26,252 £142,546 £150,112^
