PERSONAL

The Hou. Adam Hamilton, member of the War Cabinet, was a through passenger from Invercargill to Wellington by the express this morning. Mr Harry Gore, of Sydney, is at present visiting Dunedin. Captain L. D. Hastie, who has been, invalided home from the Middle East, is staying with his mother, Mrs D. R. Hastie, of Onslow street, St. Clair. Mr W. O. Cowan, accountant of the Christchurch branch of the Union Bank for the last three years, has been promoted to the audit staff iu Wellington.

Mr A. H. J. Benge, of Wellington, is shortly to go on leave before his retirement after many years’ service in the Education Department, of which he has been secretary since 1927. Advice has been received by relatives that the following men serving overseas are safe and well;—Drivers Gordon It. Miller, Owen S. Roberts, Trooper A. C. (Alec) Martin, Gunners Edward and Eric Dawkins, and Sapper. W. S. Hindmarsh (who served in the/ last war and has a son in the R.A.F.). Mr H. R. H. Chalmers, chairman of the Associated Banks, has been reelected to that position for 1942. He is also general manager of the Bank of New Zealand. The position of deputy-chairman will be taken by Mr T. P. Fotheringham, inspector of the Union Bank of Australia in New Zealand.

Mr A. S. Sutherland, of Ngaruawahia, has consented to allow his name to go forward as a candidate to_ the Selection Committee of the National Party in the Hauraki electorate. The seat was rendered vacant by the death in action of Lieutenant-colonel J. M. Allen. Mr Sutherland is well known, in local body politics, farming, and sporting circles throughout the Auckland province. He contested the Raglan seat in the interests of the National Party in 1938 against Mr W. Lee Martin, the then Minister of Agriculture.
