MEETING OF COUNCIL Tbi' monthly meeting of the council of the University of Otago, which was held vesterdav afternoon, was attended by the Chancellor (Mr IV. ■>. Morrell) and Messrs .Tames Wallace. The Early Settlors’ Association wrote expressing z’egret at the decision made by the council not to observe Anniversarv Dav on March 23 for the duration of the war.—lt was decided to assure the association that the council recognised that a, real debt was owed to the oarlv settlers, but to add that it felt itself constrained to act as it had done in the special circumstances created by the war.

The Gray Knsscll scholarship, however, was under the trust deed available only for pupils of the Ota so Boys’ Hi eh School. —The council agreed with the opinions expressed. and noted the matter regarding; the Gray Russell scholarship. On the motion of the Chancellor it was resolved —“ That the council adopt the principle of using the accumulated balance of 11 to Cameron Fund as the nucleus of a loan fund for assistance to able and deserving .students during the prosecution of their University course. Further, that the balance of the Downio Stewart Fund be also merged in the loan fund. The Professorial Board’s recommendation that the inaugural address in 1942 be delivered by Professor Smirk and the graduation address by the Rev. H. .). Ryhnrn was agreed to ; also the recommendation that the choice of subjects for the women’s scholarship be as for the entrance scholarships of the University of New Zealand. The recommendation, of the Finance and Medical Committees that Dr Sutherland, at present employed in the anatomy department, he appointed assistant in the pathology department in 1912 was approved.
