-Vice-Regal.— Her Excellency Lady Newall presided at a meeting of the National Patriotic Council in Wellington yesterday morning. His Excellency the Governor-General -received Mr J. L.Menzies (the acting Australian Trade Commissioner). During the morning their "Excellencies, attended by Captain. C. J. Holland-Martin, inspected the wharves, dock, and other facilities of tho Wellington Harbour Board. In the afternoon, at Parliament Buildings, delivery was formally made to the Go-vernor-General, as chairman of tho National Patriotic Fund Board, of five mobile canteens presented by various organisations.

Captain R. M. Gladney, officer commanding the defence forces of the Cook Islands, has arrived at Auckland from Rarotonga to undergo a refresher course.

At a meeting of directors of the Dominion Fertiliser Company Ltd., held yesterday afternoon, Mr L. J. Stevens was appointed chairman of the company and Mr A. C. Leary, deputy-chairman. Mr A. V. R. Bowden, of the Chief Post Office, Dunediu, has been appointed supervisor of the postal branch at the Chief Post Office, Invercargill, in place of Mr R. M. Scully, who retired recently on superannuation. Mr W. Thomas, of Timaru, was installed as governor- of the fifty-third district of the Rotary International in succession to Mr D. A. Ewen, of W ellington, at the annual assembly of club presidents and secretaries which is now meeting in Wellington. » Reference to the deaths of two men prominent in Dunedin business circles for many years, Mr E. H. Hodge and Mr F. W.” Mitchell, was made by the chairman of the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce (Mr S. Lawn), at the monthly meeting of the council of the chamber last night. Mr Hodge, ha said, was a member of the council from 1928 to 1930 as the representative of the Retailers’ Association, and Mr Mitchell, while not a- member of the council, was well known through his connection with various companies. The council of the University of Otago, at its meeting yesterday, expressed its deep sympathy with the parents of Mr J. A. Cole, who was lately reported as missing and believed to bo killed on active service. Mr Cole, since February, 1938, rendered good service as assistant lecturer in the chemistry department, and was granted leave of absence on volunteering for service in the Royal Navy in October, 1940..

On the motion of the Chancellor (Mr W. J. Morrell), the council of the University of Otago at its meeting yesterday afternoon, placed on record its deep regret on learning of the death of Mr F. W. Mitchell, who, from 1931 to 1940, had ably represented the Dunedin City Corporation at the council table, and for the greater part of that time rendered excellent service to tha University as chairman of tho Works Committee. Mr Mitchell’s genial and kindly personality from the first won for him the warm regard of all his fellow members, said the Chancellor. Sincere sympathy was expressed to Mrs Mitchell and her daughter in their bereavement.

At last night’s meeting of the Otago Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, the president (Mr C. W. Clark) referred to the loss suffered by the sport by the death of Mr F. D. Gibson, who had been a member of the centre for many years, and was also president of the Pacific Harrier, Amateur Athletic, and Cycling Club for a long period. Mr Clark also expressed regret at the bereavement suffered by Mr E. A. Rosevear, a former president of the centre, in the death of his daughter. The centre carried motions of sympathy. At this morning’s meeting of tho Otago Education Board the chairman (Mr James Wallace) expressed regret at tho loss suffered by Mr Jacobsen in the death of his daughter. Guests at the City Hotel include Mr and Mrs P. G. Graham (Brisbane), Mr H. E. Lewis (Auckland), Mr R. E. Murray (Wellington), Mr J. H. Poulson, Mr R. P. Harold. Mr P. Curtis, Miss Cameron (Christchurch), Mr and Mrs R. Lee (Burnham), Mr N. 51. M'Gill (Dunedin), Mr F. C. Christie (Hyde). Mr and Mrs G. D. Goodhcart, Mr and Mrs I. F. Munro, Mr J. Price (Invercargill), Rev. and Mrs A. R. Scott (Lovells Flat).
