monthly meeting of society At the monthly meeting of the Otago Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, held yesterday, the president (Mr W. Crosby Morris) was in the chair. Other members present were Messrs S. P. Leith, R. D. Stewart, J 11. Dickinson, M. L. Henderson, G. Mathieson, R. Fountain, and W. Cooper. , A sub-committee, consisting or Messrs Stewart, Reynolds, and Dickinson, was appointed to arrange the essay competition in connection with animal welfare week, which is to be held from September 27 to October 4. The society’s inspector (Mr J. J. Hiiichcliff) stated in his report that a complaint from Arrowtown that a pack-horse belonging to a rabbiter had been ill-treated was referred to thepolice officer. The officer reported that ho had been told that the man was hard on his horses, and stated that the country on which the man -was working was extremely difficult. The horse was now dead. —It was decided to communicate with the owner of the run, in the hope that he might have some information. Mr R. Fountain was elected vice-pre-sident. and Mr S. P. Norwood was appointed to the vacant position on the committee.
