BORSTAL ESCAPEES
WARDER SAVAGELY ASSAULTED |Peb United Press Association.] INVERCARGILL, November 18. Eight youths in custocTy in the Borstal Institution escaped at 9 o’clock to-night -after two of them had made a savage assault on a warder. Two of the youths later gave themselves up and six were still at large at midnight. A large posse of police and warders is combing the surrounding area. The assault occurred in the institution ranch house where. 14 inmates had their quarters. They were being locked up for the night when two of them struck - the warder. Mr O. Furniss. on the bead with a blunt, weapon and locked him in a cell. They then released six more inmates, and all eight made their escape. The six youths still at large are four Maoris and two Europeans. Air Furniss suffered only a slight injury to the head. His condition is satisfactory.
