GAMBLING MACHINES
POLICE RAID AND SEIZURE FINE OF £7O [Per United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, February 12. Following a raid by detectives on premises at 49 Wakefield street, John Sydney Cprmack appeared in tbe Police Court to-day before Mr F. H. Levien, S.M., charged with being the occupier of premises used as a common gaming house. The accused pleaded! guilty. Following complaints, a police officer on special duty went to 49 Wakefield street and obtained bets and saw betting being carried on, said Detectivesergeant M'Hugh. The machines used were “ one-armed bandits,” which have been referred to as the greatest gambling instruments in New Zealand. In the raid two machines were found. The accused admitted that ho was laying odds of £lO for a win and £2 for a place. The accused was fined £7O, and the magistrate ordered the destruction of the machines.
