BERGEN AND HIS DUMMY

CLEVER ARTISTS STARRED AT REGENT

Ventriloquism has been for many years a feature of musical hall programmes and concert parties, but Edgar Bergen and his dummy, Charlie M’Carthy, bid fair to be the greatest combination who ever amused large audiences with the aid of flexible vocal chords. Their latest picture is ‘ Letter of Introduction,’ and it is having a great run at the Regent Theatre. Comedy and pathos are admirably blended to give character to the picture which has for the past week been drawing packed and enthusiastic audiences. The loading players are all accomplished actors and actresses. Adolphe Mcnjou is cast as an ageing actor whose vanity and fear of growing old contribute to the main theme. Andrea Leeds Appears as his newlyfound daughter whose existence ho keeps from the world and with whom Ids relations bring a series of comic and tragic events. George Murphy is a vaudeville dancer who is in love with her, while the situation is further complicated by Ids partner, Rita Johnson. The picture was produced for Universal by John M. Stahl, the famous Hollywood director-producer, who is> celebrating hie twenty-fifth year in producing. There is a particularly interesting first half, including a 1 Scenic Gem of New Zealand.'
