Flying the paying-off pennant, the gift of the mayor (Sir Ernest Davis), the warship Achilles sailed from Devonport Naval Base at 10.30 a.m. for England, where she will refit and return to New Zealand in May next. A large crowd assembled near tho berth, and while the band on the quarter-dgek played tho rollicking naval all's appropriate to the occasion, final good-byes were said between the men, their wives, children, and sweethearts. Then “ All aboard!” And as the vessel drew away there was a strange silence, followed by mighty cheers from the quayside and the vessel. A bevy of small craft escorted the warship down harbour. Her route will be via Suva, Tahiti, Panama, and Jamaica. Commodore Glennie is in command.
