AUSTRALIA’S OLYMPIC PLANS
PREPARING FOR 1940 TEAM, FINANCE, AND SELECTION Constituent bodies of the Olympic Federation have been requested to state their views on the question of financing and selecting the team for Finland (says a Sydney writer). Three schemes have been formulated. First is that the respective unions have the right of selection. Members chosen have to he approved by the federation. Each union will raise the finance to send its members. A number of unions have been approached on these suggestions, and it is most likely they will be adopted. An interesting point is that the_ federation will determine . whaf; . attitude will be taken respecting any default by a union regarding finance. In 1936, when a levy was placed on aH unions, a few failed to meet their obligations. The second scheme is the_ same as that which operated in 1936, with the federation selecting the team. , - The third scheme is similar to the second, except that the April conference in 1940 will select a number of athletes and give the unions a chance to find the necessary finance. The next conference, will discuss, the admission of a woman delegate and the amalgamation of the Australian Olympic Federation and the Australian Empire Games Association. Various unions submitted estimates of the number of athletes with a reasonable chance of qualifying for an Olympic final. Best response wa si from Union, which considered its members capable of reaching all finals. The Boxing and. Wrestling Union could not give ! an accurate estimate owing to the number turning professional. ' The nearest the union could guess was two boxers and two wrestlers.
