CHRISTMAS RAILWAY TIMETABLES.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir I wish to draw the attention of the authorities to the lack of consideration to a large section of the community regarding the running of express trains on Saturday, December 24. 10-day 1 made inquiries regarding the trains runniiiE on this date, and to my astonishment I was informed that there were three expresses travelling north, all leaving before midday, the next being 6.33 p.m. The employers and eraployees who are occupied with their busy Christmas business, doing a. service to the general public, till midday on the Saturday, will be very disappointed to think thev have to waste the whole of Saturday'afternoon waiting for a tram. It appears that the above service is being run specially for the benefit ot those who arc working a live-day neck, while those in shops, offices, stores, and warehouses, etc., are a secondary consideration. They can till m titno somehow all Saturday afternoon, catch the train at 6.33 p.m., and arrive ui Christchurch at some hour the following morning, I can quite understand trains leaving at the usual scheduled time, bub the “ special ” on Saturday mornhm could, I think, be delayed and leave at, say. 1 p.m., or thereabouts, and we, who dare not ask time off from our employers during this busy period, could travel without waste of time arid do our duty to our business. in this ‘evening’s paper I see that fares are going to be increased by 10 per cent. This is quite understandable, but what about a little service for those who are not the privileged section enjoying a five-day week and not grumbling? If the authorities will consider action along the lines I have written and see their way clear to put on a “ special ” early on Saturday afternoon, they should do so promptly so that wo will know where we are. I can assure them it will be greatly appreciated.—l am, etc., December 1. Considerate.
