[From Ocr Balclutiia Courespoxdext.] PERSONAL. Mr J. Scott, fat lamb buyer for [Messrs Sims, Cooper, and Co., arrived back in Balclutha on Monday from his annual lamb buying \isit to Australia. Mr Scott states that this season was the hottest lie bad experienced in bis nine years’ visi-s to Australia. , His territory was mostly in the New South Wales Rivcria and over the border in Victoria, conditions being very dry, although in certain favoured localities the rainfall had been well up to the average. Despite the dry season, however, the quality of the lambs was better than that of last year. VITAL STATISTCS, Vital statistics for Balclutiia for Noveniber showed an increase in births compared with November last year. The figures* are, last year’s in parentheses: Births 15 (13), deaths u (/), marriages 5 (3). RAINFALL. The rainfall recorded in Balclutiia for November was the heaviest experienced this vear. Rain fell on 14 days, the total’fall being 2.86 inches. The heaviest fall (1.2 inches) was recorded on November 21. In November last year the total fall was 1.2 incres. The total fall for the 11 months ending November 30 is 17.11 inches, compared with 27.68 inches for the same period last year. PRESENTATION. Mr W. Sherlaw, who for the past four and a-half years has been employed as baker with Mr Alex. Duff, Balclutha, has secured a position with the Union Bakery in Dunedin, and leaves for his new position at the weekend. During his residence here he has been an active member of the Balclutha Bowling Club, and at the conclusion of play last night the members met in the pavilion and the president (Mr W. Mayne) presented Mr Sherlaw with a nice leather bowl bag. In doing so lie referred to the popularity in which the recipient was held and wished him success in his new sphere of labour. Hearty applause followed the presentation, and Mr Sherlaw suitably replied. ~ BOWLING. Last night two rinks from Stirling visited Balclutha and played a friendly match, which resulted in a win for the home players by 10 points. Scores (Balclutha names first) : J. Symonds, M. Totals: Balclutha 47, Stirling 37. On Wednesday a team of ladies from the Mornington Club visited Kaitangata and played a team composed of Kaitangata, Stirling, and (Balclutiia ladies. A very enjoyable afternoon’s play resulted, despite the fact that the late afternoon was chilly. The result was a win for the Mornington team. MOTOR ACCIDENT. A motor accident, resulting in the four occupants of a car receiving minor injuries, occurred on the Alain South road late on Wednesday night. Air Geo. Wallace, accompanied by a, lady and two men passengers, was driving a coupe, and when approaching Kaihiku, where extensive alterations are being made to the road, became confused with the lights and took a wrong turning, with the result that the car went dVer r into'the Kaihiku stream. The two' men passengers received injuries which necessitated their removal to the Balclutha Hospital, the lady passenger received minor bruises and shock, and Mr Wallace received injuries to his tegs. The car was fairly extensively damaged. Last night a collision took place between two cars on the Otanomomo road, but fortunately no one .was in-, jured. SWIMMING. . Last night the Balclutha Amateur Swimming Club held the weekly competitions. Unfortunately, following a very worm day, the evening turned out cold, with a chilly wind. There was a good attendance of swimmers and spectators, and some very close finishes wore seen. The officials had arrangements Well in hand, and there was no delay once a start was made. Results:— • 100 Yards Free Style, senior and intermediates. —First heat: J. Coppin 1, G. Laing 2, V. Stephens 3. Second heat; Aliss E. Clark 1, H. Holgate 2, Final: Coppin (23sec) 1, Aliss Clark (34sec) 2, Laing (4scc) 3. Times: 1.36 2-5, 1.49, 1.20 3-5. Coppin swam the back stroke iii both heat and final and put up a very fine showing. J. Berry, of Milton, also took part in the final and was the actual winner, his performance being a good one. Seven competed in this event. 33 1-3 Yards Free Stylo, juniors.— First heat: D. Nine competed. “ Learn to Swim ” Week commences at the Balclutha baths on Aloliday, when Air Bert Isaacs will be the instructor. With a week of good weather it is expected that last year’s figures will bo ex-ceeded. The week will conclude with a carnival on Saturday afternoon. CLUTHA SHOW.
