TOURIST SHIPS

SOUTH ISLAND'S CLAIMS BLUFF AS FINAL PORT OF GALL [Special to the ‘ Star.’] , s - 5( INVERCARGILL, November 30. A ‘ recommendation that Bluff fas made the final port of call for the Orient Line overseas, tourist;-ships which might come to the South Island via Lyttelton was made to .Mr E. H. Skevington, of the Sydney agenci.es and inspector - for the Orient Line, when he was met by a deputation of the Southland Progress League at the Invercargill Chamber of Commerce to-day. Mr Skevington replied that the harbour facilities at ' Bluff were at the moment the orux of the question, as the company’s mail contracts between New Zealand, Australia, and London would not permit any delays through rough. weather at New Zealand ports. _ The conference put forward suggestions that the ships should discharge ipassengers at Lyttelton, and then move to Bluff, the tourists meanwhile visiting Mount Cook, the Southern Lakes, and rejoining the vessel at Bluff, or later, at Milford Sound.

Mr' Skevington, who left Invercargill this afternoon for Dunedin, is to rejoin Mr- Arnold W. Johnson, general manager in Australia for the company. He told the conference that Lyttelton was the only port of call which had been seriously considered to date, but the suggestions regarding Bluff were, very sound .if the company considered that there would'be no delays through adverse weather.
