NEW MILE RECORD All the good reports from Australia regarding the stamina and speed of Lawn Derby were amply confirmed at Addington yesterday, when he lowered the existing mile record for Australia and New Zealand to Imin 59 2-ssee, and became the-first horse .outside America to pace eight furlongs under two minutes. The existing record until yesterday afternoon was held by Indianapolis at 2min 0 2-ssec, and, in fairness to Mr Barton’s champion, it is only right to state that when he established that time neither the track nor atmospheric conditions were as favourable as they were yesterday. Lawn Derby looks more like a thoroughbred than a pacer. He races free-legged, without boots or over-check, and can muster up a burst of speed never seen on any track in the Dominion before. He was paced by Golden Direct, driven by the veteran, Free Holmes, and to the latter a great measure of praise is due for his excellent judgment of pace. Starting about 50yds behind the mile post, Lawn Derby was travelling at top when lie commenced the journey, and ran the first two furlongs in 29 3-ssee. He was then picked up by the pacemaker, and went to the half-mile in 57 2-ssec, easily the fastest half-mile ever run in the Dominion, and the opinion was freely expressed that, having gone so fast over the first half of the journey, he would not be able to continue at a pace that would enable him to break the two minutes. The next two furlongs took 30 2-ssec, making his time Imm 27 4-ssec for six furlongs, and he was tiring over the last quarter, which took 31 3-ssec, making Imin 59 2-ssec for the full journey.

There was a tremendous burst of cheering from the huge crowd when the official time was posted, and the recep-

TROTTING, November 19. —Wellington T.C. /November 24, 26.—Forbury Park T.C. December 3.—Waikato T.C. December 3. —New Brighten T.C, December 3. —Wairio T.C. December 10.—Waikato T.C. tion given both horse and driver as they returned to the enclosure was the most complimentary ever seen at Iliccarton. It is understood that the committee of the club gave his owner, Mr J. F, Mac Kenny, of Sydney, a cheque for £250 in recognition of his horse being the first to break two minutes in either Australia or New Zealand. LOGAN DERBY'S FREE-FOR-ALL Though Fine Art won three races out of as many starts at Addington this week, the performances of the Australian visitor, Logan Derby, were even more meritorious, as his four starts were in the principal races at the fixture. After finishing third in the New Zealand Trotting Cup on Tuesday, in 4min 19 2-ssec, ho followed this up by running third again in the Ollivier Handicap, on a much slower track, in 4min 22 2-ssec, on Thursday. Yesterday in the Louisson Handicap, starting from 36yds, he was only beaten half a length in the fast time of 4miu 14 4-ssec, and later on in the afternoon showed he could sprint as well as stay, by winning the Free-for-All in 2min 39 2-ssec, running his last mile in 2min ssec, and the last half in 62sec. Yesterday’s win brought his stake winnings at the meeting to £975, and marked his fortieth win. Out of his last 19 starts he has finished out of the money on only one occasion. Logan Derby is booked to race at the Forbury Park Meeting this month, and his presence will be a great attraction. He is a much smaller horse than Lawn Derby, but a very evenly gaited pacer, and one of the games't horses ever seen racing in the Dominion.
