NOTES ON THE RACING LAWN DERBY'S RECORD [By St. Clair.] Favoured with perfect climatic conditions the concluding day oi Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Clubs Cup Meeting attracted a record attendance, and never before has there been seen an afternoon of such high-class light-harness racing in the Dominion. °The. track was in perfect order, and when the Australian champion set out on his successful attempt on the Australasian mile record both the track and atmospheric conditions were perfect. After lowering the record, and being the first horse south of the equator to pace a mile under two minutes, the huge crowd present gave Lawn Derby a rvonderful reception, and in acknowledging the toast of his horse’s performance at an informal gathering in the stewards’ room later in the afternoon, his owner, Mr J. F. M'Kinney, said it was worth making the trip to have been accorded such a wonderful reception. He was naturally very proud of his horse’s performance, and paid graceful tributes to his trainerdriver, W. J. O’Shea, and the veteran

Free Holmes, who drove the pacemaker. Without the latter’s wonderful judgment of pace he doubted whether Lawn Derby would have been able to lower the record inside two minutes, an achievement that all lovers of iight-harness horses had wished for. He complimented the club upon issuing such an excellent programme that had attracted the owners of the two best horses in Australia to make the long trip, and also on the splendid track provided. Still further honours wore in store for the Australian visitors as Logan Derby, who had already run a second and two thirds at the meeting, in the principal races, scored a clear-cut victory in the Free-for-All, and though he beat a warm favourite, the huge crowd showed its admiration for a good horse’s performance by giving Logan Derby and his driver a splendid reception on returning to the enclosure. The win of Fine Art, his third at the meeting, brought a most successful fixture to a conclusion, and gave the Methven trainer, M. C. M'Tigue, his sixth win at the meeting.
