IN HONOUR OF TOLSTOY
NEW EDITION OF HIS WORKS To mark the 110th anniversary of the birth of Loo Tolstoy, whoso popularity in Russia is second only to Gorky, Soviet publishing houses are putting out this year nearly a million copies of his works. The 17,000,000 copies of Tolstoy’s books published since 1917 are almost double the amount issued in old Russia in the course of the 20 years immediately preceding the revolution, according to data suplied by the Russian Book Chamber. Over 15,000,000 of these were brought out in the Russian language. The remaining two million came out in the 52 languages of the national groups inhabiting the Soviet Union. Tolstoy’s plays are popular with Russian audiences. Stage versions of the famous novels—‘ Anna Karenina ’ and ‘ Resurrection’ are produced by the Moscow Art Theatre.
These two plays and ‘ The Living Corpse,’ are a permanent feature on the repertoires of Moscow and provincial theatres and of amateur theatrical groups.
