SEVERE EARTHQUAKE
SHOCKS RECORDED IN LONDON MAXIMUM SWING OF NEEDLE. Press Association—By Telegraph--Copyright LONDON, November 10. A primary shock of ’ earthquake, which was recorded on British seismographs, -was registered at 8.30 p.m., a secondary shock at 8.39 p.m., and the maximum shock at 9 p.m. The instrument was still recording at 11 p.m. The seismologist believes it was centred between 5.000 and 6,000 miles from Britain. He declared there was no doubt that it was extraordinarily severe, the maximum swing of the needle being 12 inches, which was unequalled even in the Tokio earthquake in 1923. He added that within a week there had been the biggest series of shocks known for the last 30 years. RECORDED IN SYDNEY, SYDNEY, November 11. (Received November 12, at 8 a.m.) Local observatories also recorded the sbqcks, which began at 6.33, Sydney time, and continued • till after 10 a.iin. They were estimated, to be about 5,000 miles off and around Japan, possibly in Central Asia, near Irkutsk.
