PUBLIC SERVICE
MINISTER ADDRESSES CONFERENCE [Pun United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, October 18. , Tho twenty-fifth annual conference of the New Zealand Public Service Association was opened to-day by tbo Minister of Education (Hon. P. Eraser). In the course of an address, the Minister said the Government wished tho public service throughout New Zealand to feel that it was working as a team with the Government. The service had responded splendidly during the past three years to calls made upon it by the Government. He expressed appreciation and a sincere wish that tho service would feel that it was adequately remunerated and would consider throughout that it was justly treated. Healing with tho question of appeals, tho Minister said he had no knowledge of what the Prime Minister (Mr Savage) had communicated to the association, but he could . interpret the meaning of the Government in regard to appeals and that was that they should he the real thing. What was not desired was that they should be pushed to tho ridiculous point where chaos would result. The Government wanted to feel and wanted the public servants to feel that they had all the rights they enjoyed previously. Referring to the aspect of attracting men of ability and suitably remunerating them lor their services, Mr Fraser spoke of the committee recently appointed to go into the question of opportunities available in the public service for persons with higher attainments, and he said ho was hopeful that something would result from the invostigation.
