SOUTH OTAGO NOTES

[From Our Balclutha Correspondent.] INQUEST~OPENED. An inquest touching the death of Thomas Marshall Waddell, who was killed as the result of a motor car skidding on the icy road surface near Waiwera on Monday, was opened before Mr A. E. Russell, district coroner, at Balclutha yesterday morning. The only evidence taken was that of Robert Waddell, fanner, of Chertsey, who identified the body as that of his son, aged 39. Ho said deceased was employed by the International Harvester Company, and was residing at Gore. He last saw deceased about two months ago. He know that deceased was going on Monday from Dunedin to Gore with two companions, and from what he could gather, the car skidded on a piece of road near the old Waiwera flour-mill, became uncontrollable, and went over the bank into the stream, a drop of from Bft to 10ft, and then turned turtle. Deceased was in good health as far as he knew, but he had learned that he had had one or two slight heart attacks of late. At this stage the inquest was adjourned sine die. HIGH SCHOOLS AT PLAY.

South Otago High School had a very easy win over Mosgiel High School on the Balclutha Showground yesterday. The home team was heavier than the visitors and dominated play throughout, it being on rare occasions that Mosgiel were on attack. At times they made some nice movements, but the local players knew too much about the game for them. In the second spell four of the South Otago boys (the heaviest and oldest) were replaced by smaller boys, and although this helped to even the teams a bit, the South Otago team still held the advantage and won by 39 points to 0. In the first spell South Otago scored 23 points, tries being scored by Guest (2), Allan (2), Carter, Mosley, and Hay, while Corcoran converted one. In the second spell 16 more points were added, the scorers being Mosley, Hughes, Carter, and Hay, while Woods and Hay converted tries. The South Otago boys initiated some nice passing movements. Mr L. J. Edwards was referee. Two basketball teams from Mosgiel High School also made the trip, and tried conclusions with South Otago High School. MosgielA team defeated South Otago B team oy 9 goals to 8, while South Otago C team defeated Mosgiel by 13 goals to 7. STIRLING DRAMA CLUB. On Tuesday night the Stirling Drama Club presented four one-act plays to a large audience, which greatly enjoyed the performances given. The acting and general settings were excellent and reflected credit on all taking part and the producer (Mr 11, Hawker). The plays, presented and members of the casts were:— 1 The Oak Settle ’ (Harold Brighouse)—Messrs C. Richardson, G. Anderson, A. Whiteford, Miss R. Anderson, and Miss A. Inglis; ‘ln the Net ’ (P. C. Wilde) —Messrs L. Low, A. Bell, D. Inglis, and S. Logie; ‘The Bishop’s Candlesticks ’ (N. M'Kinnel) Mesdames A. Caldwell and H. C. Anderson, Atiss R. A. Anderson, Messrs D. Inglis, J. Tait, “ and A. Caldwell; ‘ Captain Cook and. His Widow ’—Mrs H. C. Anderson, Miss A. Bell, Messrs R. Anderson, R. M'Kiulay, and BoydBell. BALCLUTHA PRESBYTERIAN The annual s congregational meeting of the Balclutha Presbyterian Church was held on Tuesday night, when, there was a very fair attendance. The session report was presented by Mr J. T.' Sutherland, the. P.W.M.U. report by Mrs Dallas, choir report by Mrs Jas. Wood, Sunday School by Mr J. G. Anderson, and finance by Mr R. D. Dinneen. This latter showed that the revenue was £53 short of the . amount budgeted for, but it was hoped that with the new system of collecting the sustentation fund this deficit would be wiped out. The P.W.M.U. report stated that there was a membership of 55, and successful efforts had been made jluring the year.—The various reports were adopted. Mrs A. Noble and Messrs W. L. Jolly and Jas. Wood were reelected to the Management Committee. Amongst those present were the Visitation Committee (Revs. R. Blair and F. M'Donald and Mr I. Dent). Rev. Mr M'Donald gave an interesting address. Supper was dispensed, and the usual votes of thanks brought the meeting to a close. CARNIVAL BALL. The Britannia Theatre last night was a scene of gaiety and colour on the occasion of the fancy dress masquerade ball held under the auspices of the Central Committee of the queen car-; nival. The decorations w?re most artistic, the colours of the three queens being used very effectively, while a centrepiece of coloured lights and streamers gave a pleasing finish. Over, 350 dancers were in fancy dress, the costumes chosen being of a varied and colourful nature, and the scene from the stage, which was crowded with onlookers, was a fine one indeed. The grand march, led off by the mayor and mayoress (Mr and Mrs J. H. Stevenson) as the “ Pearly King and Queen,” followed by the Scottish, swimming, and Plunket queens (Misses Thelma Sinclair, Jean Gold, and Joan Throp), was very spectacular. The M.C.s were Messrs Ben Gold, R. M‘Kerrow, and G. Laing, and they carried out their duties efficiently, while the music as supplied by the Olutha Dance Band, augmented by members of tho Ambassadors’ Band, was all that could be desired, and the ball went with a swing throughout. A buffet supper, provided and dispensed by members of the ladies’ committees, was served in the Dalton Hall, and added much to the pleasure of all present. The function was one of the outstanding successes so far held in connection with the carnival, and reflected great credit on the organisers.
