NEW PACIFIC LINERS
PLANS NOT TO RE PROCEEDED WITH ENORMOUS INCREASE IN BUILDING COSTS Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, July 20. (Received July. 21, at 11 a.m.) It is understood that the conference between Sir Edward Beatty and representatives of the Government decided, owing to the enormous increase in costs, not to proceed with the building of the Pacific liners. The question will be reconsidered later. [■A message received on July 19 stated:- The Australian Associated Press says discussions have opened between Government officials and Sir Edward Beatty in connection with the two Pacific liners. An early statement is to be made, though it is uncertain whether it will be possible to carry out completely the earlier decisions. The delay has cost England and the dominions dearly. The original cost was about £2,500,000, but there has been such a rise in shipbuilding costs since the scheme was originally mooted that if the Governments decide to adhere to their intentions, the figure will be in the neighbourhood of £5,000,000]
