NORTH OTAGO NOTES
[From Our Oamard Correspondent.] NEW SCHOOL OPENED, There was a big attendance at the official opening by Sir A. H. Aiortlmeycr, M.P., of the now, modern Jeanoralki School at Enfield on Thursday. Air W. K. Rowlands (chairman or the School Committee) presided, and with him wore Messrs K. Hamilton (Mayor of Oamaru), J. Rodman (chairman ot the Waitaki County Council), A. V. Welsh (architect), James Wallace (chairman, Otago Education 'Board), J. Carrington (secretary of the board) , D. C. Cameron, W. M. Cooper, and N. IT. Colquhouu (members of the board). It is 62 years since the did school was opened, and the line new. school was needed. , ~ .. i After a brief address by Mr Nordraeyer. Mr Rowlands made a presentation to the head master (Mr J. 1Kibblewhite). Mr Nordmeyer was presented wth a key of the school by Mrs (Rowlands, and declared the school open. After an inspection of the line equipment of the school, a scarlet oak was planted by Mr Nordmeyer and an English ash by Mrs M. Little and Mr W. Battersby, two of the original pupils. ST. JOHN AMBULANCE. Archdeacon J. D. Russell presided over the annual meeting of the Oamaru branch of the St. John Ambulance Association. A resolution of sympathy with the relatives of the late Miss Charlotte Sumpter was passed. Praise of the good work of the association brigade and nursing division was expressed by the deputy-mayor (Mr J. C. Kirkness) and Mr Ashman (acting-secretary of the Otago Centre). Rev. J. M. M'Kenzie gave an address on mission work in China, and Mr W. Widdowson. on behalf of Toe H. . expressed willingness to organise a voluntary blood transfusion' service whenever required. The following officers were elected; — President, Archdeacon Russell; vicepresidents—Mrs J. M. Forrester, Or B. S. J. Fitzgerald, and. Mr W, J. Davies; secretary, Mr T. J. Guthrie: committee —Mesdames M'Callum, Ebbett, Skirving, Misses J. B. Wilson, M. Marwick, and Messrs H. 0. Jeffery and IT. Barclay. Mr Kirkness presented medallions to Mrs Zillah M'Stay, Miss Edna Ward, Messrs A. Aikenhead and Janies Smyth, and the warrant as cadet superintendent was handed to Mr. G. J. Sceats by the divisional superintendent. Dr E. E. Butler. SOCIAL SECURITY, There was standing room only or latecomers at the Opera House, Oamaru, when Mr A. H. Nordmeyer, M.i •• gave an outline of the Government s social security proposals. His address was fully explanatory of the scheme, as previously outlined by the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage). Regarding the health scheme, he said £1,200,000 would be paid to the doctors. The Government would pay 6s per day per occupied bed to the hospital boards, as compared with 2s Bd, the average fee collected to-day. The savings to hospital boards would be £550,000 a year and to local bodies £275,000. Payment at the same rate would be made to private hospitals. The invalidity pension would be increased from 20s to 30s a week, with a maximum of £4. at a cost of £1,050,000. There would be £1,500,000 for sustenance. Widows’ pensions would be increased to 25s a week and 10s for each child to 16 years of age, and, if at school, to 18 years. WAITAKI SCHOOLBOYS' TOUR. An invitation to send 20 boys, with a master, to participate in the Empire Youth Movement and attend a great camp in August at Banff, and also to tour Canada, has been received by Mr Frank Milner (rector of Waitaki High School) from the Canadian National Council of Education. The party will sail by the Aorangi from Auckland on July i2.
