NEW GUINEA MANDATE

SPEECH BY MR W. M. HUGHES REGARDED AS ILL-ADVISED AND PROVOCATIVE Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright CANBERRA, June 2. Australia’s war-time Prime Minister, Mr W. M. Hughes, who helped to secure the mandate of New Guinea for Australia and who is at present visiting New Guinea as Minister of External Affairs, is to be asked to explain a statement he made at Rabaul yesterday. At a public reception Mr Hughes said: “We have got our mandate. On this rook we’ve built our church, and all hell is not going to take away what we have. What we have we hold.” The Prime Minister (Mr J. A Lyons) said that Mr Hughes would be asked immediately to supply a summary of his speech, which is regarded by some of the Federal Ministers as ill-advised and provocative at the present juncture.
