“UTOPIAN COLONY”

PLANS TO SETTLE IN THE MARQUESAS YACHT BEING PREPARED IN HOBART Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright HOBART. June 2. A yacht is being prepared here to take the first colonists to a “ Utopian colony ” in the Marquesas Islands in the Pacific. The advance party consists of Mr F. Briggs and iiis wife and Mr T. Alexander of Hobart. Replies have been received ■ to circulars about the project from New Zealand, South Africa, and America. Mr Briggs, who was formerly in the photographic section of the Australian Air Force, said the settlement at Nukuhiva, in the Marquesas, would be open to people tired of the strain of civilised life. It was not intended that the settlers should go native. _ On the contrary, the amenities of civilisation would be available. Nukuhiva Island is about 14 miles long. It is mountainous, richly wooded, and fertile.
