SOUTH OTAGO NOTES
(From Our Baldutha Correspondent.) RUGBY UNION. Mr J. P. Lyall presided over the weekly meeting of the S.O. Union last night. A letter was received from the Otago Union stating that the sub-unions’ trial match would be played at Balclutha on Saturday, J uly 9.—ln view of this it was decided that an endeavour be made to arrange the representative match with South Tuapeka and South Otago at Balclutha on June 18, and to suggest to Tuapeka and West Otago subunions that they play on June 25, and that the selectors of the four sub-unions view these two representative matches with a view to selecting the southern sub-unions’ team for the trial match. D. Muir’s transfer from Clutha to Star was approved. 1 Entries for the seven-a-side on Monday next were received from Toko., St. Joseph’s, Star, High School, Valley, Clinton, while it was intimated that several more were still to come in.—lt was decided that the weight limit in the primary schools’ section be 7st, and that play commence with the school teams at 11 a.m.
It was decided that Saturday’s matches (June 4) conclude the second grade banner competition, and that the Boyd Cup competition of two rounds commence on Juno 11. when Crescent will play Toko, at Kaitangata and Clutha will play Clinton at Balclutha. In third grade on June 11 High School will play Toko, at Balclutha and Clutha will play Crescent at Balclutha, both matches to start at 1.30.
MINIATURE RIFLE SHOOTING. There was an excellent attendance at the weekly shoot of the Balclutha Miniature Rifle Club last night. Competitions for trophies for A and B grades were hold, and as several tied with their handicaps the count-back system was adopted to find the winners. H. Sinclair won the A grade trophy and W. Elliott was the successful shooter in B grade. Three of the shooters scored 78 off the rifle. Scores: R, Arbuthnott 78—2—79, L. Thomson 72—10—79, A. M'Ewan 72—7—79, A. Hayward 72—7—79, \V. Owing to the hall being engaged for the nurses’ ball next Thursday night the next shoot will be held on Tuesday. STONY CREEK BALL. The annual Stony Creek ball was held in the Britannia Theatre, Balclutha, last night, and attracted an attendance of over 150 couples. The music was supplied by the Ambassadors’ Dance Band, and the dancers spent a very enjoyable time. The grand march was led off by Mr F. Hallum and Miss Carter, and was quite a spectacular item. Messrs F. Hallum, L. Copland, D. Tosh, and W. Willocks carried out the duties of M.C.s .and kept things going throughout. An excellent supper was dispensed, and the function was well up to the standard of previous balls.
