ACCIDENTS AND DEATHS
RAILWAY STOREMAN KILLED. Thomas Madden, aged 56, married, a railway storeman employed at Lyttelton, was run over by a train at Lyttelton last evening and suffered 'injuries to the brain, from which he died soon after. Passengers on the 5.10 p.m. train from Lyttelton told the guard that they felt a bump as the train was leaving the station. The guard telephoned to Lyttelton, from the next station—Heathcote—and Madden was found alongside the line seriously injured. He died in the ambulance. DEATH IN HOSPITAL. The death occurred in Dunedin Hospital on Wednesday of James Charles Mowat (64), a farmer, of Purakanui, who was admitted to the institution on May 27 suffering from injuries said to have been caused by a fall from a horse. An inquest .was opened at the Hospital yesterday before the coroner (Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M.), who heard evidence of identification and adjourned the inquiry sine die. STRUCK BY RAKE OF TRUCKS. James S. Reid, a middle-aged man, employed as train examiner at Springfield for 14 years, was killed last night when he was struck by a rake of trucks which were .being shunted at Springfield Station. Reid, who was a married man with a family of four children, had been examining a train when he was struck by a rake of trucks being shunted nearby from another train.— Christchurch Association message. CONCUSSION THROUGH FALL. Annie Gibbs, who resides at 37 Melrose street,' Littlebourne, was admitted to Hospital at 2 p.m. today with concussion, received when she fainted and fell in a local departmental store.
