Mystery surrounds a large number of arrests in Berlin and Vienna of persons who, it is alleged, have been engaged in smuggling opium and foreign currency, hut it is significant that out of the 339 persons arrested in Berlin 317 are Jews. The police raided two restaurants yesterday and arrested 76 persons who they state are criminals. Others are political suspects and others foreigners with defective passports. The arrests in Vienna in the past few days are believed to number 2,000. They include Jews and Aryans in many spheres; most of whom are accused- of breaches of the currency laws. Others are alleged to be Communists accused of conspiring against the State. It is reported that more than 100 Jewish doctors were recently arrested, mainly on charges of performing illegal operations.
