[From Oor Correspondent.] June 1. Lawrence High School. —Mr 35. M. Stevens, of Waitati School, has been appointed rector of the Lawrence District High School, and will take up his duties on July 4. Lawrence Borough Council. Inc first monthly meeting of the newlyelected Borough Council was held on Monday night. Present: The inajox (Mr R. F. Batchelor), Crs G. H- Martin, F. J. Gray, M. Barr, J. Colgan, J. Forbes, and H. E. Pitt. Mr John Stevenson wrote offering the council a lifebuoy for use at the baths—Otter accepted and a letter of thanks to be forwarded to donor. Cr Pitt (Works Committee) reported that the main highway through the borough would bo”tar-sealed early in the spring. In the meantime the cemetery was being cleaned up. It was decided to employ any surplus No. 5 scheme labour for tidying up the footpaths. Cr Martin (Finance Committee) reported the recommendation, that the 3'ates he struck this year the same as last year, and that £SOO he transferred from the waterworks to the general account (this being merely a book entry). Thev were in the very fortunate position of having less outstanding rates this year than "they had had for many years. Cr Pitt (Town Hall) stated that though the Town Hall was a decided acquisition to the town, the loss last venr had been £99. His Worship pointed out that the borough rates had been reduced since tbe Town Hall had been a charge upon them, and that Lawrence was the only borough in New Zealand to levy a lower rate last vear than was levied four years ago. He suggested that the charges for tbe bnTl bo compared with those of other boroughs to see if more revenue couhl not be obtained by making the hall more available. Cr Colgan (waterworks) reported that tbe waterraces wore in good order. Tbe Baths Committee proposed to empty and clean the baths and refill for the winter. Cr Colgan moved that tbe Otago Electric Power Board be written to, suggesting that when the reduced charges were being considered the question of reduced lighting rates for street lighting be taken into consideration. Plunket Society.—Miss S. Templeton, who will be Miss Graham’s successor, has for the last two and a-half years been matron of tho Karitaue Home at Wellington.
