‘WHAT LACK I YET?’

TO THIS EDITOR. Sir, —I have to thank “ Profanum Vulgus ” for his letter on the above subject, as it gives me the opportunity for which I have been waiting, to help him to think and to write more reasonably about the Rev. D. C. Herron’s sermons.

In the first place Mr Herron made no appeal whatever to ignorance in his sermon. I challenge “Profanum Vulgus ” to prove that he did. The only thing that the rambling letter of_“ Profanum Vulgus” shows clearly is that the writer himself is sadly ignorant of what Christianity is, and therefore is quite unfitted to write upon the subject. Mr Herron did not say that Christianity was a leap in the dark. What he did say was that there always was, and always will be, an “element ” of a leap in the dark in becoming a Christian—quite a different matter, and quite true. Mr Herron did not ask us to forsake our reason and our intellect in order to take a leap in the dark, and do buy a “ pig in a poke.” Those are the foolish and ignorant words of “ Profanum Vulgus.” A person who becomes a Christian is never “ had.” And now for Mr Herron’s analogy. It is much more apt and true to fact than “ Profanum Vulgus ” would have us believe. When the man “ fell ” he did the correct thing; he grasped something in order to “ save ” himself. One simply must grasp Christianity if one wants to receive succour from it. But that is not enough. One must next, surrender one’s whole life up to God; one must have enough faith to let go. Otherwise one will die, spiritually, from exhaustion. Once let go, then the sure foundation of the presence and love of God is never more than three Inches away. I and others can prove that for “ Profanum Vulgus ” if he so desires. , However, my chief aim in writing is not to criticise, hut to help “ Profanum Vulgus ” to come to a true knowledge of Christianity. To that end I should like him to answer the following question :—Has he ever lived a truly Christian life?—l am, etc., Little Lack. March 21.
