ALARMING LIABILITY
LOSS OF EXPECTATION OF LIFE AMENDMENT OF ACT URGED [Pee United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, March 1. “ The recent claims under the heading of loss of expectation of life present a new and alarming liability, not only to business firms, but even down to householders who may employ either a maid, a servant, or a gardener.” said Mr U. H. Nimmo at tonight's meeting of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce. It was a matter of vital importance affecting the whole business community, he said.
After referring to the remarks by the Chief Justice (Sir Michael Myers) on this new phase of risk for damage as timely and appropriate, Mr Nimmo moved —“ That this chamber brings to the attention of the Associated Chambers of Commerce the undesirable and uncontemplated effect of the new Law Reform Act, ID3G, as regards claims for loss of expectation of life, and urges that representations should be made to the Government for amendment of that Act, so as to abolish such claims.” The motion was carried.
