NAUMAN IMPRESSES

PERFORMANCES AT CALEDONIAN SPORTS SIKOESB 8f INTIRNOWE CONTESTS [By Pistol.] R. E. Nauman was the outstanding performer in the men’s inter house competition at the Caledonian sports last Saturday, and the performances in these two events showed conclusively that the Caledonian Society acted wisely in adding a men’s section to the women’s competition that has been so popular previously. There is no doubt that the proper encouragement of interhouse sport will bring many more competitors into athletic competition, and every opportunity should be given those taking part on Saturday, to carry on with the sport. Representing the D.1.C., ffauman ran brilliantly .to win the 100yds in “even” time, revealing all the promise lie showed as a sprinter at the Otago Boys’ High School some years ago.° Doubts may be cast upon the time, but four watches agreed, and it has to be remembered that he had the assistance of a strong wind. A few days before he ran 10 2-osec under normal conditions, and there is every reason to pick him to be prominent in the Otago championships on Saturday. He is very fit at present, and although he has something to learn of hurdling, he ran 59 2-ssec to win the 440yds interhouse hurdles, only one-fifth of a second slower than Otago champion Jack Gerken’s time in winning the open 440yds hurdles handicap. Nauman has never concentrated on hurdles, but if he desired to do so he would be a useful man over the quarter hurdles. Another well-known Otago athlete who scampered fast in interhouse competition was Bob M'Lachlan, who carried the colours of Napier Motors to victory in the interhouse 440yds in 53 l-ssec. Despite the fact that his championship preparation was hampered by a leg strain, Bob won the Southland half-mile title in 2min 2 l-ssec, and he should be in the picture in the championships on Saturday. L. Logan won the interhouse halfmile in 2min lOsec, and in the women’s events there were some good performances, especially that of Miss P. Mutimer in winning the 75yds hurdles in the very good time of 9 4-ssec. This girl showed real hurdling ability and plenty of pace between the sticks, andshe has the makings of a star if she will carry on with this branch of Jhe sport. The D. 1.0. accomplished a remarkably fine achievement indeed in winning the men’s and women’s sections, the combined aggregate, the women’s march past, both men’s and women’s relays, and getting second in the men’s march past. It should be an incentive to the representatives of other firms to strive to equal this record next season.

'GEDDES RUNS WELL. Making his first appearance since hi* y return from the Empire Games in Syd-» - ney,- Ray Geddes ran a very sound race to take the mile handicap in 4mini 26sec from the 53yds mark. bad' - an easy run and finished well. Great---distance runner though he is, I believe he would surprise many by his-times---., if he devoted a little more attention to mile running. ' , The high jumping was not-very good;, and the best effort in the open eventi was A. R. Duffs sft 4iu. He shapes • quite well in this event and should do sft 6in or sft 7in with ease; He is al likely competitor in the high jump a 4 the Otago championships on By his second place in a heat of the : : 100yds handicap from the IJyd mark id . lOsec on Saturday he showed that he i 4 in form, and he should run well in the championship sprints. ■‘ Colin M'Gregor tried himself out overt the quarter-mile, and finished close to ■ T. O. Kennedy in second place, tho : winner, off 11yds, returning 50 2-ssec, M'Gregor conceding him 2yds. M‘Gre» gor promises to develop into a great quarter-miler in a year or two, and it will he in keeping with previous comment if this turns out to be his . best distance. '' . Alistair Cameron won the Mollef Shield for most points in track and field . events, and without doing anything ~ startling, had a good afternoon of. . field athletics. His 34ft 2in was good enough to give him first place m the , shot putt, but he will need to be nearer to his best to have a hone of winning the Otago title on Saturday in face of the challenge of J." M. Stewart, who registered 39ft in the Southland chamnionshins on February 19. Cameron s 121 ft 6in in the discus was well below what he has been doing in training, but it is fairly safe to nick that he will not he far short of 140 ft or better on Saturday. In the javelin throwing'- Vat Newall registered a good ■ throw .or 160 ft Sin. ? _ _ , r . From the 65yds mark, C. Keppel. of Milton, ran a strong race to win + be 880yds handicap in Imm 57 i-nw. He is a solid runner and stayed on well over the last bit. , It was a useful effort on the part of Tt. F. Gprn'e to win the mile walk m 6min 42 2-ssec from the 110yds mark. Gerrie is a most consistent performer and deserves his success.
