ATHLETIC CHAMPIONSHIPS

ARRANGEMENTS FOR MEETING DISCUSSED BY NEW ZEALAND COUNCIL [Pee United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, March 1. Numerous matters relating to the Now Zealand championships to be held at Christchurch on March 11 were discussed at this evening’s meeting of the council of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association. Mr R. WM'Villy presided. Mr M'Villy was appointed referee for the championships. The Canterbury nominations of Messrs J. W. Stubberfield, J. G. D. Ward, and R. Twyneham as walking judges were approved. The secretary (Mr H. M'Cormick) questioned the advisability of holding special events, the six miles, and certain women’s events, the object of which had been to afford a guide for Empire Games purposes.—lt was decided to advise the Canterbury Centre to delete these events and to carry on with the ordinary programme. The Canterbury Centre sought a ruling as to what province W. J. Fitzsimmons, formerly of Hawke’s Bay, was to represent at the championships. Since December lie had been a resident of Christchurch. —The Secretary said that the rule stipulated that an: athlete could represent the centre which applied for such representation. Hawke’s Bay had applied for Fitzsimmons, and Canterbury had asked for a ruling.—lt was decided to advise that the application of Hawke’s Bay had been accepted. During a discussion on remits to be discussed at the New Zealand Conference, Mr J. A. Gasson pointed out that the distances between hurdles in New Zealand were not according to international rules. Was it intended to make any alteration for the championships?—• Mr M'Cormick said the distances in the 440yds hurdles event at the_ Empire Games at Sydney were according to international rules. This had caused A. T. Anderson (New Zealand) to alter the whole stylo of his pacing. He had done very well under the changed conditions.—The Chairman said it appeared that the distances in New Zealand would have to be brought into line with international rules, but it was too late to make any alteration for this season.—lt was decided to adhere to the New Zealand rules for the championships at Christchurch. It was decided to recommend the Canterbury Centre to have moving pictures taken of all finishes at the New Zealand championships. RECORDS AND STANDARD TIMES.
