MURDER CHARGE
THE DEATH.OF THOMAS DEMSEY FOUR ACCUSED ACQUITTED Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright MELBOURNE, March 1. The four men who were charged with the murder of John Thomas Demsey. the truckdriver. were acquitted at the direction of Mr Justice MacFarlan. The men were Roy M'Farlane, Mat j thew Francis O’Keefe, William Grahame, and Harold John Reeve. The defence was an alibi, the four accused giving evidence that they were at home or with friends most of the time on October 11, the day on which it is alleged Demsey was murdered. They denied that they had anything to do w’ith the murder, directly or indirectly. Mr Justice MacFarlan, directing the jury to acquit, said the police had not proved the case beyond reasonable doubt and produced no evidence which enabled the jury to infer, as distinct from guesswork, that the men were guilty of the alleged offence.
