TEACHERS’ SALARIES

MINISTER AND INSTITUTE CONFER [Per United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, February 28. The Minister of Education (the Hon. P. Fraser) .to-day announced that he had been in consultation with representatives of the executive of the New Zealand Educational Institute on the subject of the staffing of primary schools and the salaries of primary school teachers. Mr Fraser said the discussion was of an exploratory character, and a preliminary to further discussions, which would probably occupy some considerable time. The representations of the institute would receive further consideration by himself and the Education Department, and ultimately the matters involved would bo submitted to the Government.Air Fraser said he recognised* the institute as the only organisation that could speak for all grades of primary school teachers, and he proposed to confine his negotiations to that organisation. Any representations from tho Headmasters’ Association, the- Men Teachers’ Guild. or the Women. Teachers’ Association should be forwarded through the institute. Full consideration would be given to every such representation or point of view. The Minister also announced that the question of grading primary school teachers would be considered by a committee representative of the Education Department and the New Zealand Educational Institute.
