(From Our Balqlutha Correspondent.) PERSONAL. Prior to leaving the Waitepeka. School, after two years’ teaching, for Wellington South School, Miss R. A. Mitchell was entertained at a social gathering by the residents, and wdß presented with a substantial monetary gift as a token of esteem. Mr R. F.Duff, of Moa Flat, will succeed her as teacher at Waitepeka, and until his arrival, Miss Hay, of Kaitangata, will relieve. . , . Mr J. L. Hewland, who left Balclutha last week-end «n route for England to further his studies, was met by the pupils and staff of the South Otago High School, when Gordon Guest (head prefect) expressed the appreciation of the pupils to Mr Hewland for the interest taken by him in their ■ sporting and other activities, particularly swimming, no fewer than 0 p pupils qualifying for certificates this season. The rector (Mr J. Garfield Anderson, made a small presentation on behalf of the staff, and wished jMt Hewland bon voyage. Mr Hewland made suitable acknowledgement. REPRESENTATIVE CRICKET. The Crosby Morris Cup match played at Patearoa between a South Otago A team and Maniototo resulted in a substantial win for the home team. They made 301 (E. Balkely 63, Smith 53). (Bowling for South Otago, F. Bowie took three wickets for 84 runs and M'Nutt four for 51. South Otago made the small total of 96 (T. Gold 17). Blakely took eight for 37 and Becker one for two. The South Otago B team played a Maniototo team at Naseby and fared better than the A team, securing a win by 113 runs. Maniototo made 152 (Murray 36). Bowling for South Otago, G. Barron took seven wickets for 37 runs. South Otago made 265 (G. Barron 53, A. Flew 39). Marslin, three for 61, and Barr, two for 23, were Maniototo’s best bowlers. Milton B defeated Benhar by 24 runs. Milton made 122 (Oliver 37). For Benhar Barron took three wickets for 19 runs, and Gillara four for 40. Benhar made 93 ((Reid 23). Floyd bowled well for Milton to take three for 13, Lyall took three for 19, and Wethey three for 24. SWIMMING.

Preparations are now well in hand for the Balclutha Amateur Swimming Cluh’s carnival, to be held in the Municipal Baths on Saturday afternoon. Some 30 swimmers and divers from Dunedin, as well as competitors from all South Otago clubs, will be taking part, and competition promises to be keen. All handicap events are open, and in addition there will be the club’s own senior championship events. Handsome cups and other trophies will be awarded in each event and the president of the club has donated a cup to the competitor gaining most points at the carnival. At

night a dance will be held, when visiting swimmers irill he the guests of the club Arrangements have been made for the billeting of Dunedin ana Central Otago swimmers for the weekend. and on Sunday a picnic null be held at Kaka Point, when, two team* of surf clubs froin Dunedin, m well as two from the Balclutha Club and one from Milton, will give displays and take part in events to, be arranged on the beach. The carnival promises to be the largest yet held under the auspices of the Balclutha Club, and a large attendance is anticipated. •
