Scott was nominated as the council’s representative on the Tramway Appeal Board. Mr H. F. Riggs, of Los Angeles, accompanied by his wife and son, arrived this afternoon from the north.; Mr Riggs, who has been stationed at Los Angeles for a number of years, is joining the oversea passenger staff .of the Union Steam Ship Company at Dunedin. . On the recommendation of the Library Committee, the City Council decided last night to appoint Miss T. F. Howden junior assistant at the Public Library. One of Dunedin’s best known citizens, Mr John Moloney, to-day completed a period of 60 years in business,the whole of which has been _ spent with one firm and in the one building. The firm of W. Secular and Co. was established in 1861 by Messrs Andrew, Janies, and William Scoular, and the title of the firm was afterwards altered to W. and J. Scoular, and subsequently, after the death of Mr Andrew; Scoular and the retirement of M? James Scoular, to W. Scoular and Co.Ltd. Mr Moloney began Ins career with the firm as a junior clerk on March 1, 1878, For 43 years he has been managing trustee. Mr Moloney has also been a member of the board of directors of the National Insurance Company Ltd. for 43 years, 22 years as chairman. • Mr Alan A. Brash, M.A., of Otago University, who has been at New College, Edinburgh, for the last three years, will complete his theological studies in April, and also sit for his final Edinburgh B.D. examination. His trials for license have already been, sustained, and he will be licensed b£ the Edinburgh Presbytery in April. He- lied for first place for Scotland in the Browne-Downie scholarship. Mr Brash is at present serving as assistant at the Lockhart Memorial Church, in Edinburgh. He expects to reach New Zealand in September. The deputy mayor of Timaru (Mr P. B, Foote) was unanimously appointed mayor in succession to Mr P. C. Vinnell, who died last week, at a special meeting of the Timaru Borough Council on Saturday morning. Mr Foote is well known in Dunedin, where he lived before taking up his residence in Timaru. Mrs E. O. Isaacs (manageress). Misses Gwen Rix and Joyce Macdonald left by to-day’s, express en! route to Wellington to begin an educational swimming tour of the. North Island. They will be joined in Wellington to-morrow by Miss Mona Leydon, of Auckland, the first appearance of the team being made at Lower Hutt on Thursday night. In the course of a month’s tour of the Dominion, Lieutenant-colonel Sir James Leigh-Wood, K.8.E., C. 8 .; C.M.6., arrived in Dunedin, last night, and is staying with his wife at the City Hotel. Sir James attended the Empire Games at Sydney as chairman of the British Empire Games Federation. He saw service in both the South African and the European Wars, and at the present time is the holder of a number of responsible positions. These include vice-president of the Royal Empire Society, treasurer of the Boy Scouts’ Association, and governor of Christ’s and St. Bartholomew’s Hospitals. Mr H. G. M'Quade returned to Oamaru by to-day’s expreis. Guests to register at the City Hotel include Sir James and Lady LeighWood (London, England), Mr and Mrs S. Boulton, Mr L. F.
