SOUTH OTAGO NOTES
[From Our Balc-.utha Correspondent.] SOUTH OTAGO HIGH SCHOOL. The South Otago High School opened with a roll number of 210, thig being a record. Included were 73 new pupils, a number which is Slightly less than last year. Pupils from country schools show an increased number, this being brought about by improved transport services. New members bn the staff are Miss J. Robinson, M.A., Miss B. Schofield (commercial teacher), and Mr J. M'Namara (trades instructor). This month the intention is to give as much outdoor instruction as possible, and the boys hgye this week been, in “barracks”' under Lieutenants A. R, Dreaver and J. L. Hewland, while Staff Ser-geant-major J. Little has been instructor. PERSONAL. The death took place at Kaitangata on Thursday of Mr C. T. Bissett, at the age of 76 years. Mr Bissett was a highly respected resident of the town for many years. He was a prominent exhibitor at the poultry shows, not only in Kaitangata, but at Balclutha and elsewhere. He was a member of the Kaitangata Borough Council for some years, while he was also well known on the bowling greens of South Otago. An ex-president of South Otago district passed away at Ashburton _on Thursday in the person of Mr William Henry Tilson, at the age of 67 years. He was born in Australia, and in the early years of his residence in. New Zealand he worked on Clydevale Estate, and then took up a farm at Rongahere. Later he joined the staff of the Clutha County Council as a surfaceman, and then as puntman at Paretai. He retired from this latter position about eight years ago, and went to live with his only son, Mr W. M. Tilspn, at Coldstream, Ashburton district. His wife predeceased him about 10 years ago. At the bi-monthly meeting of Clutha Presbytery on Friday the Rev. T. G. Calder was elected moderator for the ensuing six months. At, the second annual meeting of shareholders of Clutha Buildings Ltd., Mr J. H. Stevenson presided. Dr D. M. Frengley was elected to the directorate in place of Mr A. E. Russell, who did not seek re-election. At a subsequent meeting of directors, Mr J. H. Stevenson was elected chairman. The directors did not recommend a dividend this year. KAITANGATA .WATER SUPPLY. The poll of Kaitangata ratepayers on the proposal to arise a loan of. £II,OOO for the purpose of providing a water supply for the borough was taken on Wednesday and resulted in the proposal being defeated. Keen interest was taken in the poll. The result was: For the proposal, 131; against, 184 ] informal, 8. BOWLING. A Balclutha rink (C. Lewis, F. Poynter, J. Johnston, J. M'Namara) made another attempt to wrest the Gold memorial cup from the holders (D. Murray, T. Sharp, E. Mackie, P. Prescott) on Thursday night, but again the holders proved too good and came out on top by 23 points to 14 points.
