HOUSE OF COMMONS
QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS REFERENCE TO UNEMPLOYMENT (British Official Wireless.) Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright RUGBY, February 10. Answering a question in the House of Commons. Mr Neville Chamberlain referred to the -recent statement by Mr Cordell, Hull, stating that while the United States was compelled to render adequate her naval and military establishments she was ready at any time to join with other nations in a common effort to bring, about limitation or general reduction of armaments by agreement. Mr Chamberlain said; “I can assure the House that these are also the views of the British Government.” Referring to the increase in unemployment, Mr Chamberlain, answering another question, said it was largely due to seasonal causes, and was not of a nature to call for the initiation of measures other than those which the Government was already applying for the stimulation of employment. Questioned on plans in advance for measures to counteract future recession in economic activity, Mr Chamberlain said the matter had not been overlooked, and the Government was now considering what further steps it could take in conjunction particularly with local authorities. At the same time he thought it was right to say too much reliance should not be placed on the possibility of doing more by such plans than contributing in some degree to reducing fluctuation of trade and unemployment. Answering a question in the House of Commons arising out of a recent successful action in the courts for damages against the police for wrongful arrest, the , Home Secretary (Sir Samuel Hoare) described the elaborate instructions which were issued to the police, and gave an assurance that adequate safeguards would be provided for preventing interference with the liberty of the subject.
