NEW ZEALAND BEATS CHINA FIRST ROUND MATCHES Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, May 1. New Zealand eliminated China in the Davis Cup, Malfroy defeated Choy, 6-1, 6-3, 6-1. Khosin Kie defeated Stedman, 6-4, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3. Khosin Kie was too steady for Stedman who in the first set repeatedly double-faulted and netted. Stedman led 2-0 in the second set, but tho Chinese, despite the New Zealander’s strenuous efforts, obtained an unshakable lead. Stedman outclassed Khosin Kie in tho third set with beautiful passing shots, but tired in the fourth. Nevertheless, he won three games in a row for a 3-2 lead, after which the Chinese, employing stop volleys, ran out a winner. The deciding match was merely a procession. Choy played valiantly, but was completely outclassed. AUSTRALIA V. MEXICO MEXICO CITY, April 30. Quist defeated Reyes, 6-3, 6-1, 6-3. M'Grath defeated Tapia, 6-2, 6-4, 6-4. Interest in tho M‘Grath-Tapia match centred in the third set, the Mexican assuming a surprising 3-0 lead, playing accurate and well-balanced tennis. The Australian, however, quickly terminated the spurt with a deliberate forcing game, leaving Tapia at sea. M'Grath evened the score, 3-3, and the games alternated with the service thereafter until a break in Tapia’s ninth gave the Australian the vital lead, clinching the set. Crawford and Quist defeated Unda and Hernandez, 6-2, 6-3, 6-3. It was a straight mid-court game. Craw, ford’s overhead smashes outclassed the Mexicans. The Australians always had the measure of the Mexicans, and won comfortably. HOLLAND ELIMINATED AMSTERDAM, May 1. South Africa eliminated Holland. Farquharson and Kirby defeated van Swol and Hughes, 6-4, 6-3, 6-2. AMERICA V. JAPAN SAN FRANCISCO, April 30. Budge defeated Nakano, 6-1, 6-1, 6-0. Parker defeated Yaraagishi, 6-3, 2-3, 8-6, 6-1. The American was erratic and the Japanese steady and determined, but no match for Parker’s periods of brilliance. There were fiequent deuces in the third set. In the Doubles Budge and Mako defeated Yamagishi and Nakano, 64], 6-1, 6-4. The Americans relaxed in the third set, but won easily. They scored almost at will. IRELAND V. SWITZERLAND . LONDON, May 1. At Montreux Lyttelton Rogers (Ireland) defeated Ellmer (Switzerland), 8-6. 1-6, 6-1, 6-3. , . . , Fischer (Switzerland) defeated M‘Veagh (Ireland), 6-4, 6-2, 6-1. HUNGARY V. BELGIUM LONDON, May 1. At Budapest Dallos (Hungary) defeated La Croix (Belgium), 4-6, 7-9, 64, 6-3, 6-3. La Croix injured a foot in the third set. Ip. the match Gabon (Hungary) versus Hayaert (Belgium), bad light stopped play at 5-7 , 6-4, 64.
