WINTER RACING

OAMARU J.C. LAST REFRAIN WINS MEMORIAL BIG TOTALIBATM TIIWOVE* After heavy rain overnight the weather broke fine and sunny for the concluding day of the Oamaru Jockey Club’s . Meeting, and the attendance was one of the best this club has attracted for some years. . . The course was slower for the ram and a little inclined to lift m some places.. . .. , The racing was more' interesting tnan on the first day, and several of the finishes were close. Last Refrain, who was ridden into the ground in the Timaru Cup, was handled in quite a different manner in the Gardiner Memorial Handicap, and’ over the last two furlongs easily buried the opposition for pace. ■ , The principal sprint race went to an outsider in Stolen March, a three-year-old son of that good mare Satisfy. D. C. Watts drove the winners of both light harness races, and in each appeared to be. badly pocfeeted at the distance,, but the brilliance of his horses got' him out of trouble, Cannenora, in the last race, just in time to get up to win. Mr Gieseler’s starting was much better than on the first day, and the dispatch of the big .field in the principal race.; was one of the best ever seen on the course. The management of the meeting was good, reflecting credit on all the officials, and punctuality was again closely observed, the totalisator closing, only two minutes after the scheduled time for the last race. At a meeting of the committee C. Gieseler was asked to explain his reasons for allowing Fiord to start from No. 1 position at the start of the President’s Handicap on Thursday after having drawn the No. 5 position. It was decided severely to reprimand Gieseler for not complying with rule 280. H. W. Hibberd was suspended for one month for interfering with Natty in the Waitaki Hack Handicap. The totalisator handled £14,049, as against £9,754 10s, making the total for the meeting £22,974 10s, an increase of £5,688 on last year’s investments. NOVICE STAKES, £100; Second 20, third 10. OTAGO HUNT CLUB MEET AT PINE HILL The weekly run of the Otago Hunt Club was held on Saturday at Pine Hill over the properties of Messrs W. Hastie and J. L. Ford. Members of the club met at the Town Hall and proceeded to Mr Hastie’s residence, where the throw-off took place. It is many years since a hunt was held in this district, but it proved to be one of the most enjoyable outings that the club has had. Although the overhead conditions were ideal, the going was very heavy, and this, together with the fact that the latter part of the bunt was held' over hilly country and through bush, made the run a good test for both horses and riders. The first jump was a wire fence on an uphill grade which held up several horses for a short time. This was followed by a hen coop and two more wire fences before the trail led up the road to Mr Ford’s property, where there were several post and rail barriers which provided excellent jumping. The followers then proceeded up the road for about a mile to a paddock of Mr Ford’s in which there were post and rails and stone walls.

Considering the state of the going, the jumping was exceptionally good, the most outstanding performer being' Mr J. R. Brown’s Dandy, ridden by Miss M. Small!. Other horses to put in a good round were Mr R. Harvey’s mount, Blackthorn, Mr J. E. Brunton’s King Vidor, Miss D. Mowat’s Nugget, ridden by Mr F. Mackisack,. and Mr J. Morris’s Greyhawk, which won tlie jumping competition. In this event Red Fire and King Vidor tied for second place, and in the jump-off the latter won by a small margin. After the run, afternoon tea was dispensed at Mr Ford’s residence, and the master (Mr J. E. Brunton) thanked the property owners and Mr and Mrs Ford for assisting with the refreshments.

’A jumping competition was then held over three post and rails, the judges being Mr H. Boyle (Christchurch) and Mr C. R. Caffin. The results were as follows; *

GREYHAWK, Mr J. J. Morris’s (Owner) .; King Vidor, Mr J. E. Brunton’s (Owner) Red Fire, Mr AV. Hastie’s (Miss N. Kerr) ...

The whistle was blown at the cross roads for the run home, and after a solid run D. Dalton headed the pack, with G. Markham and L. Kerr second and third respectively. UNIVERSITY. An enjoyable run was held from St. Kilda. There was a full attendance of members, who all showed promising form, particularly the new members. In the run home Woods was first, closely followed by Stewart, then Ford, Dorman, and Cowan. DUNEDIN. The Dunedin Harriers held their weekly run from the Mornington School under ideal conditions. The water race was followed for about three and a-half miles, and then it was decided to turn, back. Over the last mile and a-quarter a trial handicap race was held, in which M'Laren, Coomer, and M'Leod showed very good form. From the reservoir the road was followed back to the school, and in a short but fast run home Mowatt beat M'Leod, to be followed by M'Laren and Lorimer. The rest of the pack showed the effect of a hard run, and should give more time to training. Amongst the juniors M‘Donnell and Coomer ran well. MORNINGTON. . The run was held from the Maori Hill Coronation Hall. The pack set at a good pace down past John M'Glashan College along Wakari road past the school and then up North Taieri road to past the Wakari Hospital. Here the pack split up.
