Mrs W. H. Evatt, Wellington, is the guest of Mrs R. T. Evatt, St. Clair.

Mrs Snider, Sydney, is the guest of Mrs Hjorring at her flat in Cumberland street.

Mrs J. D, Fairhnrst, of Christchurch, is the guest of Mrs Leslie Wilson, Albert street.

Mrs R. R. Stewart, Sirs A. C. Laing, and Miss Molly Scott left to-day by car on a motoring tour of the North Island.

Miss Batchelor, who arrived from the north at the week-end, is the guest of Mrs F. S. Batchelor, Belmont Lane. Mrs Fairclough, Christchurch, is the guest of her daughter, Mrs T. M'Kibbin, William street.

Miss Hay Jackson, who has been spending a holiday with Miss Edmondston, Vaila Guest House, Hillgrove, has returned to Dunedin.

A meeting of the Sales Committee, under the direction of Mrs Richard Hudson, in connection with the arts ball was held this afternoon. Everyone was most enthusiastic, and it was reported that the ball promises to be the biggest function 'of the kind ever held in Dunedin.

Staying at Wain’s Hotel_ for the Burdon—Peake wedding, which took place yesterday, were: —Mr and Mrs John Hunt (Pembroke), Mr and Mrs Noel Scaife (Pembroke), Mrs Willis Scaife (Pembroke), and Mr and Mrs Rowley (Lake Hawea). Mrs R. R. Stewart was hostess at a morning tea party in the Savoy on Monday, given in honour of Mrs John Stronach, of Timaru, who is at present visiting Dunedin. The other guests were Mrs Fergus, Mrs D’Arcy Haggitt, Mrs R. Gilkison, Mrs W. Vivian, and Mrs R. W. Brickell.

A most enjoyable eleven-table bridge drive was held at the residence of Mrs R. James, St. Clair, in aid of the funds of the Watea Croquet Club. Prizes which were won by Mesdames Clinch, Fastier, Simpkins, and O’Donnell were donated by Mrs James and Mrs Gillanders, Mrs W. E. Gibson, president of the club, on behalf of the members, thanked Mrs James for making the afternoon possible. Mr and Mrs R. N. Field gave a jolly tea party at their home on Saturday afternoon in honour of Mr and Mrs Robert Grant and Mr and Mrs Tosswill Woollnston. The time was spent in amusing competitions. Those present beside the guests of honour were Misses Ruth Lindsay, Da.isy White, Isobel Scoon, Doris Eberhardt, and Jean Sneddan. and Messrs Rodney Kennedy and Robert Alexander. After the party some of the guests went out to Anderson’s Bay to the home of Miss Daisy White. On Friday evening last the senior pupils of St. Hilda’s Collegiate School held their annual dance in the drill hall, which was charmingly decorated for the occasion with bowls of daffodils and forsythia, which gave a delightful spring-time air. Supper was served in the refectory and drawing room, where spring flowers in yellow tonings were again nsed for decoration. The guests included Mr and Mrs H. P. Kidson, Mr and Mrs R. W. S. Botting, Mrs A. A. Fairbairn, Miss Fan Peake, and Mr George Burdon, members of the school staff and their partners, and senior pupils from John Al'Glashan College and the Otago Boys’ High School. .

Mr and Mrs Tosswill Woollaston, who have been staying with Mrs Woollaston’s mother, Mrs J. G. Alexander, St. Glair, left to-day for their home in Nelson.

On Wednesday last a pleasant time was spent in games and competitions when Miss Isy Simpson was hostess at a “ pantry ” evening given in honour of her cousin, Miss Annie Simpson, whose marriage takes place next week.

The monthly meeting of the Otago Ex-Girls’ High School Club was held in the lounge of the Otago Women’s Club on Monday evening. Owing to the absence of Miss F. M. Allan, Mrs W. B. Taverner presided. The evening was a musical and dramatic one, with the following programme: Vocal solos, Mrs C. Briggs and Mrs C. M. Barnett, accompanied by Airs Wahnsley; a play reading, ‘ The Monkey’s Paw,’ produced by Miss Jean Ballard with the following cast:—Misses Ballard, M. Matheson, N. Tyrrell, A. Armstrong, and D. Barley; instrumental trio—Misses Ray Al'Garrigal, Trixie Allan, and Stella Bayley; flute solo, Miss Dorothy Smaill; and a pianoforte duet, Misses Margaret Matheson and Kathleen Wilson. Airs Taverner proposed a vote of thanks to the performers at the close of the programme.

The Australian Society. On Friday last the ladies of the Australian Society held a very enjoyable afternoon at the Wilford Tea Garden, Airs M. W. Shiel (president) acted as hostess, and the presence of such a large gathering indicated that these functions are becoming very popular

During the afternoon the president of the society, Mr H. M. Mackay, paid a surprise visit, and he was warmly welcomed and, expressed his pleasure at the continued success of such gatherings. Afternoon tea was served in the lounge, which was prettily decorated with large bowls of spring flowers. Musical and elocutionary items arranged by Miss Anita Winkel were rendered as follow :—Miss Norma Brown, elocutionary items; Miss Pat Woods, vocal solo; Misses Jean Caldcr and Pat Woods, duet; Miss Edna Lungley acted as accompanist. Mrs' H. H. Neivall proposed a hearty vote of thanks to the performers. Among those present ■were Mr and Mrs H. Mackay, Mesdames M. W. Shiel, H. A. Newell, W. J. White, R. Sewell, F. G. Paape, H. Gallagher. L Dunn, Pywell, E. Clayton, A. Glue, Reg. Paterson, C. A. Thompson, F. Andrews. J. Cunningham, Lennox, Snowball, Grant, J. Page, M‘Nicholl, A. H. Myles, J. Stoddart, Morrison, J. Brooks, Symons, Misses B. Snowball, Gaynor Paape, K. Muldownie, and Griffiths.

| Staff Dance, Dawsons Ltd. On Thursday evening, in the comfortI able surroundings of the Strand Salon and to music supplied by Air Alf, Pettitt’s orchestra, a most enjoyable evening was spent by the staff and friends of Dawsons Ltd. Songs rendered by Aliss Agnes Guy were much enjoyed, A guessing competition was won by Air R. Guy, iiicky spot by Aliss P. White and Air K. Simpson, Alonte Carlo by Airs G. Chance and Air G. Abbott. The Al.O.s’ duties were ably fulfilled by Air C. J. Hook and Air S. J. Webb. Those present were' Air and Airs G. Chance, Air and Airs S. J. Webb, Air and Airs G.
